Samsung SGH-E635 Review - Introduction / Design

Reviewed by: Allen Tsai - Oct 05, 2005

Introduction

The smaller the better; that's the motto many consumers abide by. Electronics follow the trend, and the cell phone is no different. Some devices get thinner, while others use innovative form factors to optimize size and functionality.

Samsung's latest device, the E635, is one of the smallest phones to date, but not to be confused with simple. Loaded into the tiny shell, the E635 features a VGA-quality digital camera, instant messaging, color display, and long battery life. More than just an ordinary phone, the Samsung E635 may prove that lighter is better when it comes to cell phones.

Offering a balance of compact size and technology, the E635 appeals to a broad range of users looking for big features within a small size.

Design

Samsung SGH-E635 ClosedAs the latest device to follow the smaller is better adage, the Samsung SGH-E635, measures a tiny 85 x 43 x 22 mm, able to literally fit entirely in the palm of the hand. Weighing just 79 g, the E635 is lightweight and portable, perfect for the pocket-stuffing averse.

Featuring a black and silver exterior, the majority of the E635's front is covered by a 65K-color LCD. Left and Right, Dial, Clear, and Exit keys surround a 5-way keypad below the screen.

The back features the lens to a 0.3-megapixel camera, activated by pressing the Camera Key along the left side. Complete with Flash for low-light conditions, a mirror is also included so users can see where the lens is pointing when taking self-portraits or group shots.

Above the Camera Key, a headset jack used for handsfree functionality is revealed by sliding down the protective cover. Along the right, and infrared port sends and receives data wirelessly while volume keys adjust earpiece and tone volumes during calls and standby.

Slid open, the backlit numeric keypad is revealed, otherwise tucked away to avoid misdials. While fairly sizable for comfortable typing, the keys are flat to accommodate for the top sliding over, so there is not much feel while text messaging.

Out of the box, the Samsung SGH-E635 comes with a standard 800 mAh Li-Ion battery, AC adapter with conversion plug, handsfree headset, and user manual.
