Samsung SGH-P777 Review - Entertainment / Internet

Entertainment

Able to store up to 1000 contacts in the Address Book, the SGH-P777 also features common PIM (Personal Information Management) applications allowing consumers to access features such as Alarm, Calculator, Calendar, Currency Converter, To-Do List, and Voice Memo. Supporting POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP accounts, users are also able to check third-party servers such as Hotmail.

However, users aren't limited to preinstalled software. Using the popular J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) standard, new games and applications can be downloaded and installed on the SGH-P777. With an abundance of developed applications and games, users will be able to browse through software titles online, then transfer them from a PC or through the web.

Four J2ME games come with the SGH-P777: Airship Racing: Around The Globe, Arch Angel, Bobby Carrot, and Freekick Festival. A console game, Airship Racing has an unusual plot; players have to navigate an air balloon around the globe. With only thirty islands where the landings can occur, eagles, piranhas, tornadoes, thunder clouds are obstacles in the way. The high-flying Arch Angel is a classic shoot-em-up first-person jet fighter game. While Bobby Carrot is a puzzle game where the goal is to collect all the carrots on the level. Beware of tricky traps blocking the way, as users navigate through all 50 levels. Lastly, soccer fans will love Freekick Festival, using parodies of real-world superstars named Backhim and Owan.

Internet

Samsung SGH-P777 Airship Racing: Around The Globe GameContaining a WAP 2.0 browser, the SGH-P777 supports GPRS Class 10 (4+2) for increased bandwidth capabilities over standard CSD networks. But for truly fast connections speeds, the SGH-P777 supports EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) for enhanced GPRS by providing significantly higher data rates.

The migration of GSM to EDGE results in less strain on current voice traffic bandwidth and allows for higher transfer rates when downloading multimedia or browsing the web. Building on existing technology, EDGE allows for more than double existing GPRS rates. While theoretically the SGH-P777 could transfer at burst speeds of up to 200 kbps, actual rates will be about 70 - 135 kbps.

Storage

Being labeled a multimedia phone with MP3 playing and video recording capabilities, a generous amount of storage is needed. And with 100 MB of internal memory, the SGH-P777 provides about an hour and a half's worth of music, stores hundreds of photos, and thousands of text message and emails. Should users manage to use up all the storage, they'll have to clear out space; there's no slot for expandable memory cards.
