Basic Features
As a quad-band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz) world phone, the T809
is compatible with GSM networks throughout North America, Europe, and Asia,
provided it is unlocked.
As a T-Mobile exclusive, the T809 will be locked to the network by default,
a common carrier practice to prevent customers from taking discounted phones
(purchased in conjunction with a plan) to other carriers. Thus users will
need to request an unlock code if they plan to bring the T809 overseas.
Good-standing customers can usually request the unlock code after 90 days
of service.
Rating the T809's 800 mAh Li-Ion battery at a mediocre 4.3 and 130 hours
(5.4 days) of talk and standby times respectively, real world usage times
will be less. Handset manufacturers often list talk-time and standby-time
ratings with disclaimers about variable performance, often referring to
the times they publish as maximum times. Unfortunately the T809's battery
life is below average compared to other devices on the market.
Screen
As
a consumer electronics giant, Samsung also manufactures high-end plasma
televisions, experience that has undoubtedly been transferred to the small
screen. So it's no coincidence Samsung phones have been known to feature
cutting edge LCD technology.
Similarly, the T809 doesn't disappoint. While many companies still incorporate
outdated 65K-colors displays, the T809's extra large 2.1-inch (240 x 320
px) 262K-color (18-bit) screen is state-of-the-art.
Built with TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD technology, rather than STN
(Super Twisted Nematic), circuit transistors are placed directly on the
glass. Resulting in faster refresh rates from not having to scan each pixel
location and more vivid colors, TFT displays render colors more brightly
for clearer imaging in both indoor and outdoor conditions.
Not enough can be said for the T809's outstanding display. Taking up
a majority of the front surface area, the LCD is the focal point of design
and the foundation to all other multimedia capabilities. Consumers looking
for outstanding brightness with a large viewing area will be hard pressed
to find a better display in today's marketplace.
