Sony Ericsson S710a Review - Entertainment / Internet / Storage

Entertainment

Common preinstalled software is included on the Sony Ericsson S710a, including Alarms, Calculator, Calendar, Code Memo, File Manager, Notes, Phonebook, Record Sound, Stopwatch, and Timer.

Allowing users to download and install new games and applications, the S710a also supports the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME). As the most popular Java platform for mobile devices, there are many software applications already created, available for download.

But even more exciting, the S710a utilizes the Mascot Capsule Java 3D gaming engine. Rendering 3D objects in real-time, the S710a incorporates sophisticated APIs resulting in more detailed games.

In addition to backgrounds, screensavers, and ringtones, Sony Ericsson has always been on the forefront of customizability with its unique theme features. Using themes, consumers can change colors, menu layouts, images, and ringtones, making their S710a more personal. A number of preloaded themes are included, but more can be created and downloaded.

Streaming media is available through the Media Player. Video and music codec support of MPEG-4, H.263, AMR, MP3, and 3GP allow users to stream a variety of media information including music, news, videos, radio broadcasts, and live traffic information.

For applications, SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language), an advanced XML-based protocol, allows users to create and transmit Microsoft PowerPoint presentations on mobile devices. By using a media editor, users can incorporate text, audio, images, and video clips to assemble full multimedia presentations on the display.

Internet

The Sony Ericsson S710a supports WAP 2.0 with GPRS Class 10 (4+2). Also supporting EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution), the S710a allows for higher transfer rates when downloading multimedia or browsing the web. Building on existing technology, more than double existing GPRS rates are achievable, with theoretical burst transfer speeds of up to 200 kbps; however average rates will be around 70 - 135 kbps.

Storage

Sony Ericsson S710a SlotUp to 500 contacts can be stored on the onboard phonebook. More than enough for photos, music, videos, applications, and games, the S710a has 32 MB of internal memory. However should users need more, Sony Ericsson has been quick to supply an expandable Memory Stick Duo slot. Unfortunately, being Sony's proprietary portable storage media, the Memory Stick Duo requires a premium price; costing more than storage medium from other formats.
