Internet
The web browser for the Sony Ericsson Z525a supports WAP 2.0, which allows
users to get the latest news, weather, sports scores, and stock quotes.
Consumers can expect to get connection speeds of up to 48 kbps on the Z525a
which still relies on outdated GPRS Class 10 (4+2) packet-based technology.
Mobile technology has begun moving to 3G broadband access which provides
transfer rates two to three times faster than GPRS networks. With the Z525a,
Sony Ericsson is providing a phone that is still not capable of accessing
Cingular's EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution) network.
While this phone is still not EDGE capable, Cingular is already releasing
devices and services that will take advantage of the high-speed HSDPA network,
which is even faster than EDGE, and will be used for transmitting full motion
video and providing ultra-fast audio.
Storage
With some variation for software configuration and file content, the
Z525a offers 16.0 MB of memory that is shared among stored multimedia. Without
a memory card slot to allow for expansion, the user will need to clear out
space if more storage is needed. While this phone is not intended for heavy
multimedia users, the lack of memory renders the MP3 player useless.
Connectivity
The
Sony Ericsson Z525a supports Bluetooth 2.0 technology and offers impressive
connection possibilities. Without cables, it is able to pair with headsets,
car hands-free equipment, computers and PDAs. It can connect to as many
as 16 devices within a range of 10 meters.
Working with a Bluetooth capable PC, it is easy to transfer pictures,
songs, and videos to and from the phone. It has the added ability to be
turned into a wireless modem to allow internet connectivity and data transfer.
Synchronizing the calendar, notes, and phonebook with a PC can even be done
without line-of-sight.
An interesting feature of the Z525a is the inclusion of Bluetooth HID
(Human Interface Devices) profiles. This allows the phone to essentially
become a keyboard and mouse when it is connected to a PC with Bluetooth.
Through the assignment of computer keyboard key combinations to each button
on the phone's keypad, consumers are able to use the phone as a remote to
control various applications on their computers.
The Z525a offers several options for downloading HID configuration files:
Bluetooth, IrDA (infrared), or USB data cable (optional accessory). The
files are necessary to get keypad controls of individual computer applications
and include an XML file for the keypad and an image that is used for the
display. These files can be edited by the user themselves and several configuration
files are already pre-loaded on the phone. Navigating a computer desktop,
controlling a presentation, and using media players can all be done with
the pre-loaded configuration files.
With its extensive Bluetooth as well as infrared and USB connection capabilities,
the Z525a is ideal whether you are using a wireless headset or transferring
files to/from your computer.
